What is a Torpedo?

The Terre Haute Torpedoes, founded in 1997, is known throughout the Midwest for a first-class, year round swimming program. We offer a guided age group program for children age 5 and up, from the beginning swimmer to the most competitive and skilled swimmer.

Lessons have been a part of the program since 2005.  Diving was added in January 2019.

When a young person becomes a member of the Terre Haute Torpedoes, they learn the value of sportsmanship and teamwork. Our swimming and diving program provides physical, emotional, and intellectual skills that will last a lifetime.

Diving program started in January of 2019.

Beginner to master diving instruction will be held at the Vigo County School Corporation Aquatic Center. The dive club will be structured like the Torpedoes swimming as it will be by age group. The athletes will compete against others their age. Many divers come with a background in gymnastics, cheer and dance. The new club hopes to welcome these athletes to try diving. Contact Troy Cuthbertson, head dive coach, [email protected] or 812-230-1960 for more information.

Swim Lessons

Group lessons are offered to young swimmers (age 3 and up) to learn to swim, with an experienced instructor in the water with them.  We have lifeguards and a coordinator present at all times.  Lessons will occur with no more than 4 swimmers per instructor, and will be 30 min in length.  The session can vary, but is usually twice per week for 3 weeks straight.  Lessons follow a curriculum bassed around water safety, followed by stroke proficiency.  Questions should be directed to lesson coordinator Devan Knott, [email protected].

Swim Team

Terre Haute Torpedoes offers training and practice groups for swimmers of all ages and ability levels. It is the goal of Terre Haute Torpedoes to offer age specific training for all of our athletes, geared towards challenging each individual and developing each individual to the best of THEIR abilities.

Team Structure

The Terre Haute Torpedoes use a progressive age group program designed to develop the child physically and mentally in a systematic manner. There are six groups, based upon the swimmer’s age and ability. Group assignments are determined by the coaching staff after an observed swim. These training groups are:

Orange - Our beginners, still learning the ropes.  Practices offered 4x per week, for about 45 minutes.  Most are under 8 years old.

Blue - Still a developmental group.  Practices offered about 4x per week, for about 60 minutes.  Swimmers are generally 8-10 years old.

Bronze -  A group working the transition from technique to training.  Practices offered about 5x per week, for about 60 minutes.  Swimmers are generally 9-11 years old.

Silver -  Our lower level training group.  Practices offered about 6x per week, for about 90 minutes.  Swimmers are generally 8-10 years old.

Gold - Our highest level training group, for age group swimmers.  Practices offered 7-8x per week, usually for 2 hours.

Senior - This group is our high school aged athletes. Practices offered up to 11x per week, between 60 and 120 minutes per session.

Masters - This group is for adults interested in either fitness or competition. Practices offered up to 9x per week, between 60 and 120 minutes per session.
