About

What is a Torpedo?

The Terre Haute Torpedoes, founded in 1997, is known throughout the Midwest for a first-class, year round swimming program. We offer a guided age group program for children age 5 and up, from the beginning swimmer to the most competitive and skilled swimmer.

When a young person becomes a member of the Terre Haute Torpedoes, they learn the value of sportsmanship and teamwork. Our swimming program provides physical, emotional, and intellectual skills that will last a lifetime.

Team Structure

The Terre Haute Torpedoes use a progressive age group program designed to develop the child physically and mentally in a systematic manner. There are six training groups, based upon the swimmer’s age and ability. Group assignments are determined by the coaching staff after an observed swim. These training groups are:

Orange and Blue – These are novice groups with major emphasis on stoke technique. This is the entry level for the team with an introduction to competitive swimming. These swimmers practice three days per week for one hour each day.

Bronze - This training group is very similar to the Orange and Blue groups: however, the swimmers in this group have started to exhibit strong swimming skills. There is stronger emphasis in this group on competitive swimming and the refining of stroke mechanics, turns and starts. They attend meets more frequently and practice tree times per week for

one hour each day.

Silver - Swimmers in this group have demonstrated a strong skill level in all four of the competitive swimming strokes as well as starts and turns. These swimmers focus on the finer aspects of stroke technique as well as an introduction to the training aspect of competitive swimming. Focus is centered on competitive swimming and attendance at meets is strongly encouraged. There are equipment requirements for this group. Silver swimmers practice five days per week for one and one half hours each session.

Gold - The athletes in this group are strong swimmers in all four competitive strokes and are ready for the rigors of a full training schedule. The focus of this group is to build aerobic base, refine technique and develop race strategies for the various swimming events as well as an introduction to other aspects of competitive swimming (ie…dryland, weights, mental preparation). Athletes will make there greatest aerobic gains in this group and will thus spend more time training for longer events require of the older age groups. Attendance at swim meets is a requirement at this level as it is means of evaluating the athlete. There are equipment requirement for this group. As a full fledged training group, Gold swimmers practice six days a week, usually lasting two hours per session.

Senior - This is the High School aged swimming group. Most swimmers in this group have a strong level of ability in all aspects of competitive swimming. Training is a large focus of this group as well as refinement of race strategies. Athletes generally begin to specialize more in there respective stroke events. The goal of the athletes in this group is to achieve qualifying standards to many of the upper level meets throughout the Midwest. There are equipment requirements for this group. Senior swimmers generally practice two times per day, six days per week for two hours at a time.
